Arizona State beats Southern Miss in Sun Devil Classic finale
TEMPE, Ariz. — The University of Southern Mississippi beach volleyball team was swept by No. 8 Arizona State in the Sun Devil Classic on Saturday. The Golden Eagles lost in straight sets at all five flights, concluding their west coast trip with a 5-0 defeat, according to the match summary.
Arizona State, which improved to 9-0 this season, dominated the competition from the start. The Sun Devils won the first wave of matches in straight sets at the second and fourth pairings. Zuzanna Michalska and Abby Lewis from Southern Miss narrowly lost the first set 21-19 but fell 21-12 in the second set at the second flight.
Arizona State continued its strong performance in the second wave, winning the final three flights in two sets each. The first flight secured the overall match victory for the Sun Devils, who now have nine wins this season. The order of finish included wins at flights two, four, one, three, and five, with the first flight clinching the match.
The Golden Eagles are set to travel to DeLand, Florida, next week for the Stetson Spring Invitational. They will face UAB and Stetson on March 13 before competing against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Florida Gulf Coast, and North Alabama on March 14, according to team schedules.
