Alcorn’s Cooper Harris Goes 5-for-5 in Loss to Jackson State

Jackson, Mississippi — Cooper Harris went 5-for-5 at the plate Friday night, but Alcorn State lost 13-8 to Jackson State in a non-conference game at Braddy Field. The game was part of the JSU Tournament, which features three days of baseball hosted by Jackson State.

Trailing 13-4 entering the ninth inning, the Braves attempted a rally against the Tigers. Shortstop Asher Friedman singled, followed by Rayfield Adams III, who singled to right. Third baseman Kanious Davis then walked to load the bases before Jackson State made a pitching change. Talmadge Davis replaced Kevin De Los Santos and faced Harris, who hit a three-run double to right, bringing Alcorn within 13-7. Keaten Hawk added an RBI groundout, making it 13-8.

Jackson State opened the scoring with a run in the first inning and added five more in the third. Payton Boines doubled in two runs, and Tyshon Patty doubled home another, extending the Tigers’ lead to 5-0. Alcorn scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth, with Harris hitting his first home run of the season—a solo shot to deep left field. The Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and added three more in the sixth and seventh innings for insurance.

Jackson State pitcher Kade Walker earned the win, improving to 2-1. He pitched four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Alcorn starter Jacob Wingard took the loss, dropping to 0-2 after 2.1 innings, during which he allowed six runs on seven hits and five walks. Harris led all players with five hits, four RBIs, and four runs scored. Robert Tate Jr. went 3-for-5 for Jackson State, scoring twice.

Alcorn returns Saturday for a game against UNC Asheville at noon at Braddy Field. The tournament continues through the weekend, with updates available on Alcorn State Sports’ social media channels.
