Alcorn Women’s Tennis Wins Third Straight Match
Vicksburg, Miss. — Alcorn State’s women’s tennis team secured its third straight win Monday, beating Mississippi Gulf Coast 5-2 in the Braves’ home opener at Hall’s Ferry Road Tennis Courts.
The Braves took an early lead by capturing the doubles point with wins on two courts. Zoe Crimmel and Oihane Villanueva Lopez defeated Isona Arnaus and Victoria Ros Fabuel 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Pia Pugliese and Paige Baronich edged Taylor Briffa and Katherine Grados 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, preventing a sweep. On the third court, Matea Andelic and Hana Bajramovic beat Katelyn Walker and Andee Rogers 6-1.
Alcorn jumped ahead 3-0 after winning two singles matches early. However, Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Arnaus defeated Crimmel 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles after lineup adjustments by the Braves’ coach. Bajramovic then won a competitive match over Victoria Ros Fabuel, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Pugliese topped Villanueva Lopez 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, and Briffa secured a 7-5, 6-2 win over Paige Baronich at No. 4.
The most dominant performance came from Katherine Grados, who defeated Katelyn Walker 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Matea Andelic also secured a straight-set victory over Meredith Matthews, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles. Alcorn is scheduled to face Georgia Southern on Friday in Starkville, Mississippi, at 10 a.m., followed by a match against Mississippi State at 4 p.m.
