Alcorn Women’s Tennis Falls to Southern Miss in Non-Conference Match
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Alcorn State Women’s Tennis fell 4-0 to Southern Miss on Tuesday afternoon at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. The Braves, with a 3-11 record, showed resilience despite the defeat, with several matches still in progress when the team victory was clinched.
Southern Miss opened the match with a doubles sweep. Hannah Chambers and Miranda Xu won court one 6-0, while Angelina Blinova and Sakura Sudo claimed court two 6-1. A third doubles match featuring Katherine Grados and Natalija Nikolic was still ongoing at 4-1 when the doubles point was decided.
In singles play, the Braves fought hard across the lineup. Freshman Hana Bajramovic lost the first set 7-5 in the top flight before her match was left unfinished. Nikolic and Grados were also still competing when play was halted, each with matches very much in progress.
The singles victories for Southern Miss came at courts three, five, and two. Miranda Xu defeated Zoe Crimmel 6-1, 6-1; Manuella Persson beat Taylor Briffa 6-0, 6-2; and Hannah Chambers won against Amelia Tatafu 6-2, 6-3.
Alcorn interim head coach Kersten Vanem-Walker emphasized the importance of non-conference competition in preparing for the Southwestern Athletic Conference season. “We’re going to keep competing and keep getting better every single day,” Vanem-Walker said. “Playing tough opponents like Southern Miss, Alabama, and Mississippi State in the non-conference is exactly what prepares us for SWAC. These moments are building us. Our kids are fighting, and that’s not going to stop when conference play starts.”
The Braves are scheduled to return to the court Friday, Feb. 27, hosting Kennesaw State in Vicksburg, Mississippi, at 10 a.m. for a non-conference match.
