Alcorn Women’s Basketball Hosts Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman in SWAC Action

Alcorn State University will host Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman for SWAC women’s basketball games at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. The games are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 14.

The Braves enter the matchup with a 12-10 overall record and a 9-2 mark in conference play. Their last game was a 64-60 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, snapping an eight-game winning streak, according to school officials.

On Thursday, Alcorn faces Florida A&M at 6 p.m., with the game broadcast on the Alcorn Braves Sports Network. The Saturday game against Bethune-Cookman begins at 1 p.m. Both contests will be streamed online, with live stats and radio coverage available, officials said.

Alcorn’s defense ranks third in the SWAC, allowing 61.7 points per game and holding opponents to 38.6 percent shooting. Maya Hunkin-Claytor leads the team with 50 three-pointers, tied for the most in the conference, and has the second-best three-point shooting percentage overall at 30.8 percent. Nakia Cheatham averages 12.6 points and has four double-doubles this season.

The Braves’ assist leader is Kiarra Henderson, with 101 assists and an average of 4.6 per game. Cheatham also scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the last game, marking her fourth double-double of the season.

In their most recent game, Arkansas-Pine Bluff rallied from a 19-point deficit to win 64-60, ending Alcorn’s eight-game winning streak. Henderson scored 20 points, and Cheatham added 11 and 10 rebounds, according to team officials.

Alcorn holds a 7-5 all-time series lead over Florida A&M, including a four-game winning streak. The teams last met in January, with Alcorn winning 61-48 in Tallahassee. The Rattlers are 6-15 overall and 6-5 in SWAC play, averaging 59.8 points per game and shooting 35.7 percent from the field.

Bethune-Cookman is 5-19 overall and 3-8 in conference, arriving in Mississippi after winning two straight games. The Wildcats average 55.5 points and give up 69 per contest. They are led by Daimoni Dorsey and Kailyn Peters in scoring. The series between Alcorn and Bethune-Cookman is tied at four games apiece, with Alcorn winning three of the last four encounters.
