Alcorn State Women’s Basketball Beats Florida A&M on the Road, Improves to 6-1 in SWAC
ALCORN, Miss. — The Alcorn State women’s basketball team continued its strong SWAC play Saturday with a 61-48 road win over Florida A&M at the Al Lawson Center. The Lady Braves improved to 6-1 in conference games and earned a key victory on the road as league play heats up.
Alcorn State maintained steady play throughout the contest, but it was their defense and composure down the stretch that sealed the win. After the game was tied 43-43 at the end of the third quarter, the Lady Braves limited Florida A&M to just five points in the final period while scoring 18 themselves, pulling away late.
Nakia Cheatham led the Lady Braves with 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. The graduate student attacked the lane effectively and created scoring opportunities, especially during critical moments in the second half. Kiarra Henderson contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, along with eight assists and five steals, fueling the team’s transition game and disrupting the Rattlers’ offense.
Bench contributors Chrishunti Walker and Ja’Sharreah Hunt added 7 and 8 points, respectively, while Walker also grabbed six rebounds. Maya Claytor hit two key three-pointers and finished with seven points, adding perimeter spacing for Alcorn State. The team dominated the glass, outrebounding Florida A&M 44-28, and scored 28 points in the paint, controlling the game inside and out.
The Lady Braves forced 17 turnovers, converting them into 17 fast-break points. Florida A&M shot only 32.1% from the field and struggled against the pressure, especially in the fourth quarter. Alcorn State was efficient at the free-throw line, making 11 of 15 attempts, including several late free throws that sealed the victory.
Alcorn State will return home Thursday to host Grambling at the Davey L. Whitney Complex, looking to continue its strong conference stretch and improve its standing in the SWAC.
