Alcorn State overpowers Jackson State in SWAC basketball game
Alcorn State beat Jackson State 83-65 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi.
Jackson State, with a record of 9-18 overall and 8-6 in SWAC, was led by Daeshun Ruffin, who scored 21 points and dished three assists. Dionjahe Thomas added 14 points, Jayme Mitchell Jr. scored 13, and Jalen Tatum finished with 10 off the bench.
The Tigers shot 38.9% (21-of-54) from the field and 19.0% (4-of-21) from three-point range. They also shot 73.1% (19-of-26) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Alcorn State, with a 7-19 record overall and 6-8 in SWAC, shot 41.4% (24-of-58) from the floor, 27.3% (6-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 76.3% (29-of-38) from the free-throw line.
Tycen McDaniels led the Braves with 25 points and 14 rebounds. The team shot 36% (9-of-25) in the first half and 45.5% (15-of-33) in the second. They also made 84.2% (16-of-19) of free throws for the game.
Jackson State struggled offensively in the first half, shooting 35.7% (10-of-28) from the floor and 18.2% (2-of-11) from three-point range. They improved slightly in the second half, shooting 42.3% (11-of-26) from the field but only 20% (2-of-10) from three-point range. The Tigers shot 70% (7-of-10) from the free-throw line for the night.
