Alcorn Softball Splits Doubleheader with Grambling State
Alcorn State and Grambling State split a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. Grambling won the first game 8-7, while Alcorn took the second 9-2, according to school officials.
In the opener, Grambling trailed 7-4 entering the seventh inning before rallying for four runs to secure the victory. Z’Natria Evans drove in four RBIs with a triple and a double, and Logan-Ray Gaspar added two RBIs with a game-winning bunt single, officials said. Kamryn Broussard led off the seventh with a double, and Evans’s two-run double tied the game at 7-7. Ziya Donaldson’s RBI single put Grambling ahead, and Gaspar’s bunt sealed the win.
Alcorn’s Yahnya Acevedo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. The Braves scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-4 lead, with Acevedo, Paris Thompson, and Mariah Morgan all contributing key hits. Grambling jumped ahead early, scoring four runs through three innings. Erin Gibbs pitched three scoreless innings in relief for Grambling, earning the win, the school reported.
In the second game, Alcorn pitcher Alainah Felton tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out four to earn her third win of the season. Felton also went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs. The Braves scored two runs in the second inning and broke the game open with a three-run third, highlighted by Jamyiyah Cotten’s two-run single and Mariah Morgan’s RBI single, officials said.
Grambling briefly tied the game at 2-2 in the third but was unable to keep pace. Alcorn added four runs in the fifth inning, including a bases-loaded walk and consecutive RBI singles from Sanai Salvant and Acevedo, to put the game out of reach. Morgan finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Acevedo went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, according to the school.
