Alcorn Softball Prepares for SWAC Series at Texas Southern

Alcorn State softball will face Texas Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference series this weekend in Houston. The series begins Friday at 3 p.m. with a single game, followed by a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m., at Memorial Park, according to team officials.

The Braves have shown offensive potential despite a challenging record. They are batting .279 with 128 runs, 163 hits, 10 home runs, and 101 RBIs this season, according to team statistics. Yahnya Acevedo leads the team with a .371 batting average, 18 RBIs, and three home runs. Paris Thompson has been a steady presence behind the plate, hitting .317 with 13 RBIs and a .423 on-base percentage.

Alcorn has been aggressive on the basepaths, stealing 33 bases in 36 attempts. However, the team’s pitching has struggled, with a team ERA of 7.13 and opponents hitting .341 against them.

Texas Southern enters the series with a 14-6 record and a 4-2 mark in SWAC play. The Tigers rank nationally with a team batting average of .312 and have scored 127 runs through 20 games. Karisma Garcia leads the team with a .455 on-base percentage and 15 RBIs, while Jade McQueen has slugged .648 with three home runs. Their pitching staff boasts a 3.18 ERA, with Miranda Pena going 5-0 and striking out 34 batters in 32 innings.

Last season, Alcorn took one of three games in Houston. The Braves’ most recent win in Houston was a 4-3 victory in 2024. Their last series victory against Texas Southern was in 2013, when they won back-to-back games.

Head coach Billie believes the team is ready for the challenge. “Anytime you get on the road in SWAC play, you know it’s going to be a battle,” she said. “We’re looking forward to the challenge and trust this group to respond. Every conference series matters, and we’re treating this trip with the same preparation as any home series.”

The Braves will host Mississippi Valley State in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Alcorn Softball Complex, according to team officials.
