Alcorn Softball Hosts Xavier (La.) in Weekend Doubleheader

Alcorn State University softball will host Xavier University of Louisiana for a weekend doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Alcorn Softball Complex, after weather postponed the games originally scheduled for Feb. 27. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m., with live stats available for both games, according to school officials.

Alcorn comes into the series after splitting a doubleheader with Dillard University earlier in the week. The Braves are batting .299 with 100 runs scored through 15 games. Ka’Miya Dillon leads the team with a .378 batting average, and Yahnya Acevedo has been a power threat, slugging .681 with three home runs and a team-high 17 RBIs. Acevedo is also perfect in stolen base attempts, going 8-for-8.

The team has stolen 26 bases out of 27 attempts and maintains a .948 fielding percentage with five double plays turned. This will be the first softball meeting between Alcorn and Xavier, according to school records.

Head coach Billie described the matchup as a chance to showcase their readiness. “Xavier is a quality program and we know they’re coming to compete,” she said. “We need to stay focused from the first pitch and carry that intensity through both games.”

The Gold Nuggets, Xavier’s team, holds a 3-9 record overall and is 0-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference. They are led by third-year head coach Kailey Anderson. Xavier’s team batting average is .277, with an average of five runs per game. Their pitching staff has a 5.70 ERA, and opponents are hitting .333 against them this season.

Alcorn’s last game was a 12-8 loss to Dillard, where the Bleu Devils scored four runs in the fourth inning to take control. Despite the setback, coach Billie praised her team’s effort and resilience, emphasizing finishing games and maintaining competitive spirit. The team will now prepare for Xavier, aiming to deliver their best performance yet.
