Alcorn Softball Hosts Texas Southern in Key SWAC Series
Alcorn State is set to host Texas Southern for a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference softball series at the Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. The series begins Friday, April 10, with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m., followed by a single game at noon on Saturday, April 11, according to the school.
Alcorn enters the series after winning its last two games, one against Grambling State and another against Jackson State. The team has a 7-5 record at home this season, with standout performances from Yahnya Acevedo, who leads the team with a .346 batting average, 36 hits, and 22 RBIs, and Olivia Miller, who is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak.
Historically, Texas Southern has dominated the series, holding a 34-6 record against Alcorn since 2013. The Tigers swept last month’s three-game series in Houston and have won nine of the last ten meetings overall. However, Alcorn secured a 1-0 victory in the series opener in 2025 in Lorman.
Texas Southern enters the weekend with a 20-10 overall record and a 9-6 mark in SWAC play. The team is batting .297 and has hit 19 home runs this season. Jade McQueen leads the Tigers with a .405 batting average, five home runs, and 20 RBIs. The pitching staff is led by Zaria Turner, who sports a 1.58 ERA over 80 innings and has 56 strikeouts.
In their last game, Alcorn defeated Jackson State 10-8, with Alainah Felton pitching a complete game and hitting a key two-run home run. Olivia Miller went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, fueling the Braves’ offensive effort. Felton struck out five and allowed four hits, earning her fourth win of the season.
Alcorn coach Billie said the series is crucial for the team’s standings and emphasized the importance of playing at home in front of their fans. She expressed confidence in her team’s recent preparation and focus heading into the series.
The Tigers will travel to Memphis on Tuesday, April 14, for a nonconference game against the Tigers at 4 p.m., according to team schedules.
