Alcorn Softball Hosts Prairie View A&M for SWAC Series Weekend

Alcorn State softball will host Prairie View A&M for a three-game SWAC series this weekend at the Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. The series kicks off Friday, March 13, with a game scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by contests on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., according to the school.

Alcorn enters the matchup with a 9-11 overall record and is 0-1 in conference play after a postponed series against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The team is batting .295 with 125 runs scored this season. Yahnya Acevedo leads with a .350 batting average, 18 RBIs, and a .633 slugging percentage, while catcher Paris Thompson hits .340 with 13 RBIs and a .459 on-base percentage. Karmen Bernard is hitting .349 with 13 RBIs and five sacrifice hits, demonstrating her ability to move runners along.

Rajayla McBride is batting .378 with five stolen bases, making her one of the team’s top performers. Off the bench, Sanai Salvant has a .517 on-base percentage thanks to eight walks in 21 at-bats and has scored 11 runs. Chiara Olison leads Alcorn’s pitching staff with a 6-6 record and has also contributed offensively, batting .361.

Prairie View A&M holds a 23-7 advantage in the all-time series since 2011, including a 13-game winning streak dating back to 2022. The last series win for Alcorn was in 2016 in Prairie View, Texas. The teams did not face each other in 2015.

Prairie View enters the weekend with an 11-11 overall record and a 3-0 mark in SWAC play. Under head coach Vernon Bland, the team has a .305 batting average and averages 4.7 runs per game. They also have a team ERA of 4.67.

In Alcorn’s most recent game, they suffered a 9-1 loss at Louisiana Tech. Sanai Salvant scored the only run for the Braves, who were limited offensively. Louisiana Tech’s Reese Torres drove in three RBIs, and Ruby Fidge earned the win in the circle. Chiara Olison took the loss for Alcorn, surrendering six runs over 4.1 innings.

Alcorn will next play a midweek game at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, Louisiana, scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m., before returning to SWAC play.
