Alcorn Softball Edges Jackson State 10-8 in Nonconference Game

Alcorn State’s softball team defeated Jackson State 10-8 Tuesday at the Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. The game was a nonconference matchup.

Alainah Felton pitched all seven innings for the Braves, striking out five and allowing four hits. She also hit four batters and issued six walks but kept Jackson State at bay with a groundball-heavy approach, inducing 14 groundouts. Felton earned her fourth win of the season in what was considered her best outing of the year, according to sources.

Offensively, Olivia Miller led the Braves with a 3-for-3 performance, three RBIs, three runs scored, and a three-run homer. Miller’s performance kept the pressure on Jackson State’s pitching all afternoon. She also stole a base and was the catalyst for Alcorn’s offense.

Jackson State took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to unearned runs caused by stolen bases and a fielding error. Alcorn responded in the bottom of the second with six runs on six hits. Key hits included a double by Chiara Olison and Miller’s three-run homer. The rally extended the lead to 6-2.

Alcorn added two more runs in the third inning, one on a sacrifice fly from Mariah Morgan and another on an RBI groundout by Karmen Bernard. Bernard finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Jackson State chipped away with single runs in the third and fourth innings, but Felton’s home run in the fifth extended the lead to 10-5.

The Tigers rallied in the sixth, scoring three runs on a pinch-hit two-RBI single from Avelina Mclean and an RBI groundout by Sommer Tyes. Despite the comeback attempt, Felton closed out a clean seventh inning to secure the win.

Olison contributed defensively with 12 putouts and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. For Jackson State, Thenya Kennedy went 1-for-4 with an RBI and four stolen bases. Starting pitcher Madison McDowell took the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits over four innings. Brooklyn Morris pitched the final two innings for the Tigers, allowing two runs on three hits.

Alcorn is set to host Texas Southern for a three-game series beginning Friday at 2 p.m. at the Alcorn Softball Complex. Fans can follow updates on Twitter @BravesSports and view behind-the-scenes content on Instagram @AlcornSports and YouTube Braves Sports Network.
