Alcorn Set to Face Texas Southern in Critical SWAC Baseball Series

Alcorn State is headed to Houston for a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series against Texas Southern at MacGregor Park. The games are scheduled for Friday through Sunday, with the series beginning at 3 p.m. Friday.

Both teams are unranked in this week’s major polls. Alcorn seeks to end a seven-game losing streak and improve its conference record. The Braves will also play a midweek game at Stephen F. Austin next week, marking four consecutive games in Texas.

Jaylyn Bennett leads Alcorn in hitting with a .365 average and a team-high 35 hits. He is currently on a six-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 22 straight outings. Keaten Hawk has reached base in his last 10 games, while Kanious Davis leads the team with 16 stolen bases.

On the mound, Davis has a 3-1 record with a 9.64 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Freshman Devin Kriley has the team’s highest strikeout total with 26 in 26.1 innings. Three Braves are batting above .300 against SWAC pitchers, including Bennett (.382), Hawk (.308), and Christian Dunn (.300).

Texas Southern enters the series tied for the SWAC lead with Bethune-Cookman, boasting an 15-12 overall record and a 10-2 conference mark. The Tigers have won eight of their last 10 games, including a sweep of Alabama A&M last weekend. They have won all four of their SWAC series thus far.

Top hitters for Texas Southern include Miguel Morales (.423), Jonathan Trejo (.411), and Byron Robinson (.407). Robinson has a seven-game hitting streak and has contributed eight home runs this season. The Tigers’ pitching staff features Justin Mayes and Joshua Peña, both with four wins each.

Alcorn’s last win against Texas Southern was an 8-6 victory at home on May 10, 2024. The Braves have lost five straight games in Houston, with their most recent series there occurring in 2024. The team has not won a series against the Tigers in more than a decade.

Head coach Hardy emphasized the importance of the series, stating, “This is as big a series as you’re going to find on our schedule right now. Every game has SWAC Tournament implications, and our guys understand that.”
