Alcorn Hosts Jackson State in SWAC Men’s Basketball Rematch
Alcorn State will host Jackson State on Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game. The Braves, seeking to avenge an 89-86 loss earlier this season, aim for their third straight win over the Tigers.
Jackson State enters the game with a 9-17 overall record and an 8-5 mark in SWAC play. The Tigers have won their last two games, defeating Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman at home. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST and will be streamed on SWAC TV, with live radio coverage on WPRL 91.7 FM.
Alcorn, which is 6-19 overall and 5-8 in conference, has struggled defensively this season, allowing opponents an average of 82.4 points per game. The team is led in scoring by Shane Lancaster (288 points), Tycen McDaniels (253), and Jameel Morris (239). Morris also leads with 78 assists and 51 steals, while McDaniels has swatted 28 shots, the most on the team.
In their last outing, the Braves fell 86-78 to Florida A&M, despite five players scoring in double figures. Morris scored 15 points, including five in the second half, and dished out seven assists. Lancaster added 13 points, with four three-pointers, and Woodard scored 14. The team shot 51.4% after halftime but could not overcome the Rattlers’ early lead.
Jackson State has lost its last three meetings with Alcorn but won the most recent matchup on Feb. 24, 2024, by an 87-73 margin. The Tigers are 4-12 on the road this season but have managed a recent victory at Mississippi Valley State. They are outscored by an average of 15.3 points per game and average 70.2 points on offense.
Led by head coach Mo Williams, Jackson State features guard Daeshun Ruffin, who averages 23.6 points per game and leads the team in assists and steals. The Tigers have posted six double-doubles this season, including recent performances by Ruffin and Dionjahe Thomas.
