Alcorn Beats Mississippi Valley State 74-66
ITTA BENA, Miss. — Nick Woodard scored a team-high 16 points to lead Alcorn to a 74-66 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Monday at R.W. Harrison HPER Complex. The Braves improved to 5-18 overall and 4-7 in the SWAC, while the Delta Devils remain winless in league play at 0-10.
Woodard was one of three players in double figures for Alcorn, which outscored Mississippi Valley State 20-2 in bench points. Shane Lancaster added 15 points, marking his 14th game of the season in double digits. Omari Hamilton contributed 13 points, going 5-for-7 at the free-throw line, his season high.
Jameel Morris dished out four assists and had three steals for the Braves. Lancaster led the team with five assists. Williams connected on a pair of three-pointers, extending his streak of at least one three-pointer to eight consecutive games.
Alcorn shot 52% from the field in the first half, including 5-for-13 from three-point range. The team built a 15-point lead twice before halftime. The Braves also committed a season-low four turnovers and scored 11 points off 11 MVSU miscues.
In the second half, Alcorn maintained a double-digit lead for most of the period. The Delta Devils trimmed the deficit to 57-47 with 7:24 remaining after a pair of baskets, but MVSU could not complete the comeback. James scored 15 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, after returning from an injury.
