Alcorn Baseball sweeps doubleheader from Champion Christian

Alcorn State’s baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Champion Christian on Tuesday at Willie E. ‘Rat’ McGowan Stadium in Lorman, Mississippi. The Braves won the first game 10-4 and completed the sweep with an 11-10 walk-off victory in the nightcap, both seven-inning games.

In the opener, Cooper Harris drove in four runs and Jamir Hollway scored three times for Alcorn. Harris went 2-for-4 and delivered a two-run single in the third inning, giving the Braves a 4-1 lead after Champion Christian briefly led in the top half. Harris also added two RBIs in the sixth. Jaylyn Bennett contributed a double and triple, knocking in two runs, while Hollway went 3-for-3 with a stolen base.

Champion Christian’s Ayden Morgan went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, two stolen bases and a double. The Tigers left 10 runners on base. Starting pitcher Kanious Davis earned the win, striking out nine over four innings and allowing one earned run. Eric Abbott took the loss, surrendering six earned runs in four innings.

In the nightcap, Alcorn overcame a six-run deficit and scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 11-10. The Braves trailed 6-0 after two innings and 10-8 entering the final frame. Their winning run came on a fielding error by Champion Christian shortstop Michael Sullivan with the bases loaded. Harris led Alcorn offensively, going 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs, a sacrifice fly and two runs scored.

Chase Moore added two RBIs and scored twice, while Kanious Davis, who entered as a pinch runner, scored the winning run. Sullivan drove in two runs for Champion Christian, which left five runners on base and committed three errors. The Tigers scored five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Caden Shryock and a steal of home by Kayne Brantley.

Alcorn starting pitcher Myles Dews pitched 5.1 innings, allowing nine runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts. Hayden Konkler earned the win in relief, improving to 1-0. Jaxun Moore took the loss for Champion Christian, falling to 1-2 after allowing four runs in two innings. The Tigers used four pitchers and hit six batters during the game.

Alcorn is scheduled to host a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series against Bethune-Cookman on March 20, with the first pitch set for 6 p.m. The team and its fans can follow updates on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
