Alcorn Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Texas Southern in SWAC Series
Alcorn State and Texas Southern played a doubleheader Saturday at Bobcat Park in Cypress, Texas, as part of a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series. The teams split the games after Friday’s matchup was postponed due to weather.
In the first game, Alcorn rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Texas Southern 10-6. The Braves scored seven runs in the final three innings, including a key two-run single from Keatan Hawk in the eighth. Nico Garcia added an RBI hit-by-pitch in the ninth to extend the lead. Hawk finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and Chase Moore reached base four times.
Texas Southern jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning, aided by three Alcorn errors. Jonathan Trejo hit a solo home run in the sixth to extend the Tigers’ lead to 6-3, but Alcorn responded in the seventh and eighth innings. José Cherena earned the win in relief, allowing one earned run over 4.1 innings. Jacob Wingard recorded his first save of the season with two shutout innings.
The second game saw Texas Southern dominate 12-5. Trejo homered twice and drove in three runs, while Byron Robinson added a three-run homer. The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning and added six in the third, with Anthony Ruiz and Miguel Morales contributing key hits. Jose Luccioni earned the win, allowing two runs over five innings.
Alcorn’s offense was led by Christian Dunn, who hit his first home run of the season, and Kanious Davis, who hit a solo shot. Starting pitcher Kayden Sutton took the loss after allowing 12 runs in 2⅔ innings. The teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday at MacGregor Park in Houston at 1 p.m., concluding the series.
