Abraham Baldwin edges William Carey to close series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey claimed the weekend series but fell short of completing a sweep, losing 6-5 to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Saturday afternoon at Milton Wheeler Field.

The Crusaders started strong, scoring four runs in the first inning. Gage Hinnant led off with a double, and DeeJay Booth walked. Hays Carley then hit a two-run single to center, and Jayden Mark and Taylor Walters reached base to keep the rally alive. Cam Senior added an RBI single, and Franklin Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk, giving Carey a 4-0 lead before a double play ended the inning.

Carey extended its lead to 5-0 in the third inning when Senior hit an RBI double. Abraham Baldwin struggled offensively early, managing just two baserunners through the first four innings. The Stallions started to rally in the fifth, capitalizing on errors and a walk. Z. Bowman and D. Davis drove in runs with doubles, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Both teams’ pitching settled in afterward. The Stallions drew closer in the eighth, with D. Davis hitting a two-run double to trim the lead to 5-4. Dylan Wallace then struck out the next batter to strand the tying run. In the ninth, a walk, bunt, and error loaded the bases for ABAC. Q. Rawls delivered a two-run double, giving the Stallions their first lead at 6-5.

Wallace retired the final three batters to seal ABAC’s comeback victory. Carey had a chance in the bottom of the ninth, putting the tying run on base, but Hodges induced a game-ending double play. William Carey returns to action March 6, traveling to Point University in West Point, Georgia, for a 4 p.m. game.
