Northwest Mississippi women top Lawson State 69-57 after holiday break
Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team improved to 9-4 with a 69-57 victory over Lawson State Community College on Monday night at Howard Coliseum. The Cougars dropped to 6-8 with the loss.
The Rangers trailed at halftime but came out strong in the third quarter, reclaiming the lead and holding on through the final period. Dekyra Mitchell led Northwest with 21 points, including four three-pointers, and added three rebounds and an assist. Alorian Story scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, earning her fourth consecutive double-double.
Northwest opened the game by hitting several three-pointers, with Mitchell making three in the first quarter to help build a 17-10 lead. The Cougars responded in the second quarter, fueled by key three-pointers, and took a 35-34 lead into halftime. The third quarter saw the Rangers retake control, with Mitchell hitting another three to ignite a run that put them ahead 53-46 going into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, sophomore Alorian Story scored 14 of her 20 points, helping Northwest extend its lead to 61-49 with seven minutes remaining. The team maintained its advantage and closed out the game impressively. Head coach Williams credited a halftime discussion for the team’s improved energy and focus.
Northwest forced 29 turnovers and held Lawson State to 16, with Zoe Metcalf contributing seven points, four assists, and six rebounds. Metcalf also recorded five steals, and Layla Hampton added six assists and seven points. The Rangers outshot the Cougars from the free-throw line, going 12-18 compared to Lawson State’s 4-11.
