Northwest Mississippi Men’s Basketball Beats Lawson State 115-101 in Second Meeting
Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s basketball team outscored Lawson State 65-51 in the second half to earn a 115-101 victory Monday night at Howard Coliseum. The win improves Northwest’s record to 10-4, with the team’s ninth game of the season scoring at least 100 points, according to team stats.
Both teams kept the game close early, with the Cougars taking a 29-24 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Northwest responded with a 9-2 run, sparked by sophomore LaMarcus Crawford, to close the gap to 50-47 at halftime. The game remained competitive until the second half, when Northwest opened with a 20-4 run, fueled by efficient shooting and turnovers from Lawson State.
The Rangers pushed their lead to 67-54 after six minutes into the second half. By the five-minute mark, Northwest had surpassed the 100-point mark with a 102-83 advantage. The team finished with 59 rebounds, including 28 offensive boards, and limited Lawson State to just 12 offensive rebounds.
Zahir Gutierrez led Northwest with 22 points in 20 minutes, shooting 5-for-9 from three-point range and adding two assists. Demetrius Duffy scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for a double-double, while Crawford contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds. Three other players scored in double figures, including Dakota Morris with 15, Ladarrius Brown with 14, and Chancellor Terry with 10.
Northwest’s coach, Mark Redman, praised his team’s effort, emphasizing rebounding and effort. The team will face Lawson State again Wednesday in Birmingham, Alabama, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. local time. The upcoming game will follow the women’s matchup, and Redman said the team plans to review film and do a walk-through in preparation.
