Northeast edges Jones 51-47 in low-scoring contest

ELLISVILLE — Jones University shot a season-worst 25% and could not overcome its shooting struggles in a 51-47 loss to Northeast on Monday night. The Bobcats fell to 17-5 overall and 6-3 in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference.

Northeast improved to 8-14 and 2-5 after winning its third straight game over Jones. The game opened with an uncharacteristically low-scoring first quarter, ending 5-3 in favor of the Tigers. Both teams combined to shoot just 3-for-25 in the period.

Jones continued to struggle offensively, finishing the game 1-for-12 from three-point range in the final three quarters. Despite their shooting woes, the Bobcats led 22-19 at halftime. Their largest lead was four points early in the third quarter, but Northeast tied the game at 37-37 with 2:01 remaining in the period.

Larissa Hubbard’s jumper with 1:35 left gave Jones a 45-44 lead, but the Tigers responded with a 7-2 run to seal the victory. Jakera Ducksworth led Jones with 13 points, while Sanyla Smith added 11 and Lamarah Cleaves scored nine with seven rebounds. Maniya Kirksey led Northeast with 18 points, and Tyquashia McMillian scored 15.

Jones will face Northwest on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on nwccrangers.com/watch.
