No. 9 Belhaven edges Millsaps softball in 8-inning thriller
JACKSON, Miss. — Millsaps College softball pushed No. 9 Belhaven into extra innings Wednesday before falling 2-1 in an eight-inning game at the Millsaps College Softball Complex.
Belhaven (25-7) secured the win thanks to a run in the top of the eighth inning. The Blazers scored after advancing a runner to third on a bunt and an error, then scoring on a throw during a play at the plate, according to sources. Millsaps (17-9) responded with a rally in the bottom of the eighth but was unable to tie the game.
The Majors received a strong pitching effort from junior Julie Amacher, who pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only an unearned run, with two strikeouts, one hit, and one walk. Sophomore Hailey Marange pitched the final 3.2 innings, also giving up an unearned run with one strikeout and four hits allowed. Marange escaped a bases-loaded situation in the eighth to preserve the lead, according to team reports.
At the plate, Millsaps was led by sophomore Hailey Peterson, who went 2-for-3 with a run. Caroline Mathis added two hits, including a double, while Ella Morgan Sears and Brynn Arena each contributed one hit. The team took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after Peterson singled and Gregg sacrificed her home.
The Blazers responded in the fifth, tying the game on an RBI single following a double and a walk. Millsaps threatened in the sixth and seventh innings but was unable to score, with Belhaven maintaining its lead into extras. The game ended with Belhaven scoring the winning run in the eighth after a bunt and an error, which allowed a runner to reach third and then score.
