Mississippi College softball sweeps Valdosta State in doubleheader
Mississippi College softball swept Valdosta State in a doubleheader Saturday at the MC Softball Complex. The Choctaws edged the Blazers 9-8 in the first game and won 10-0 in the second.
In the opening game, Mississippi College scored first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Morgan Lavergne scored on an error, and Sarah Lee drove in another run. The Choctaws extended their lead to 3-1 after two innings. Valdosta State responded with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Madison VanAllen, putting the Blazers ahead 7-3.
Mississippi College mounted a comeback, with Shelby Samples hitting a solo homer in the fifth. The Choctaws rallied in the sixth, with Ellie Fryar hitting a two-run double and Megan Matheis driving in a run to make it 8-7. In the final inning, Lavergne’s RBI double and an error allowed her to score the winning run, sealing a 9-8 victory.
In the second game, Mississippi College started strong, scoring four runs in the first inning. Blakely Gill hit a three-run homer, and Matheis added a solo shot. The offense continued in the second inning, with multiple players driving in runs to extend the lead to 9-0. The Choctaws added a final run in the third, and pitchers Reagan Rios and Grace Wallis kept Valdosta State off the board for the shutout, winning 10-0.
Rios pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out two, while Wallis added an inning of scoreless relief. Shelby Samples led the offense with three hits and three RBIs. Blakely Gill and Megan Matheis contributed multiple hits and RBIs, helping Mississippi College improve to 21-13-1 overall and 11-6 in conference play. Valdosta State falls to 14-17 overall and 8-9 in conference.
The teams will meet again March 28 in Clinton, Mississippi, for Senior Day.
